OWEGO, Founded in 1787 has a current population of 4,442 & is centrally located between Ithaca, Elmira & Binghamton. The village limits extend on both sides of the Susquehanna River which is lined with buildings of outstanding architecture and impressive grounds. Residents of Owego have included notables John D. & William Rockefeller (who attended Owego Free Academy); Ralph Pumpelly, geologist & explorer; Belva Ann Lockwood, Lawyer & Suffragist; Henry Martin Roberts, auhor of "Roberts Rules of Order." Tourist sites of historic value are Evergreen Cemetery, high on a hill with an overlook from Indian Girl's Monument; Hiawatha Island, formersite of a grand hotel. Unique shops line Front Street known as Riverow, as well as others in the central business district. Quaint eateries are found in the Riverow area & an historica hotel where are $43 Million Dollar Lotto ticket was sold inn 1999. Other attractions include six fine golf courses, a NASCAR race track, Marvin & Hickories Parks, miniature golf, go-cart racing, the local libraray & museum. Overnight accomodations are available at local B&B's, cabins, motels & hotels. A major highlight each June is the annual Strawberry Festival which attracts 30,000 visitors. |

Owego is located in eastern Tioga county on the banks of the Susquehanna River. It is an area that is rich in tradition and history. The village of Owego serves as the county seat and has a wide range of cultural, musical and artistic opportunities available. Owego is a convenient drive to many of the larger cities of the region. Approximately 23,000 residents live in the school district. The village of Owego has 6,200 citizens. Route 17, a major expressway, runs through the area. Owego is a good place to raise a family with a warm community atmosphere. The Owego Apalachin Central School District is committed to a mission that is to challenge students, within a caring environment, to become confident, competent, contributing citizens with a lifetime thirst for learning. To this end the district has embraced a vision that calls for Success for all Students. The district has a comprehensive high school (Owego Free Academy) program, supported by the Owego Apalachin Middle School and Apalachin and Owego Elementary Schools. A staff of over 400 individuals support the district's mission and vision. There are 2500 super kids that attend our schools. Owego Apalachin Public Schools are governed by a seven-member Board of Education. The School Board generally meets on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, 7:00 p.m., Adm. | Tioga County is an historic area that offers a wealth of cultural and recreational opportunities. From the majestic Susquehanna River Valley in the southern portion of the county to the charming villages in the north, each one of Tioga County's nine towns has something special to offer. There are parks, and museums, outdoor concerts, special community festivals, arts and crafts ... you can even ride and dine on a fully restored historical railroad In the spring and summer, sports enthusiasts can watch major sporting events ranging from auto racing and motocross to water-skiing or you may enjoy golf at one of eight golf courses, play tennis, or see a softball game. Enjoy canoeing and kayaking or do some hunting and fishing. In the winter, Tioga County comes alive with cross-country skiing, ice skating and ice fishing. Those who want to "get away from it all" can enjoy a peaceful walk down historic tree-lined streets, shop for antiques, or enjoy a romantic weekend at a secluded little bed & breakfast. The many community parks and campgrounds throughout the county offer a chance to get back to nature without leaving civilization behind. Tioga County is home to a number of musicians, artists and crafts people, many of whom are recognized throughout the nation.
